Dear Parishioners and Visitors,
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a mountain where they witness something extraordinary — the Transfiguration. For a brief moment, the disciples see Jesus in His glory. Understandably, Peter wants to stay there. “Lord, it is good that we are here.” Who wouldn’t want to remain in a place where everything feels clear, peaceful, and certain?
But faith — much like life and work within a community — does not happen only in extraordinary moments.
Most of our lives are lived not on mountaintops, but in the everyday responsibilities entrusted to us: caring for our families, serving others, supporting coworkers, educating our children, and building a community rooted in dignity and respect. At Saints Simon and Jude, I have the privilege through Human Resources of walking alongside many of the people who make our parish and school mission possible — teachers, staff, volunteers, and ministry leaders who quietly serve each day.
What stands out to me in this Gospel is not only the glory revealed on the mountain, but what happens next.
The disciples become afraid. And Jesus responds in a very human way — He comes close, touches them, and says, “Rise, and do not be afraid.”
In many ways, this reflects how we are called to care for one another as a faith community. Whether someone is navigating change, facing challenges at work or at home, or simply feeling overwhelmed, the call of Christ reminds us to lift one another up with compassion and understanding.
The voice from heaven also gives us a simple but powerful instruction: “This is my beloved Son… listen to him.” In a world filled with constant noise and competing priorities, listening — truly listening — can be one of the greatest acts of respect and love we offer each other.
As we continue our Lenten journey, perhaps the invitation for all of us is this: to pause long enough to listen to Christ, and then carry that spirit of patience, mercy, and encouragement into our daily interactions.
Because the strength of a parish is not only found in its programs or buildings, but in how we treat one another as beloved sons and daughters of God.
May we continue building a community where people are supported, valued, and reminded — just as Jesus reminds His disciples — to rise and not be afraid.
In service,
