In 2011, the faculty of SSJ initiated a variety of extracurricular activities that were designed to be of some interest to our students who were looking for something to participate in other than sports or Student Council. This venture has been such a success that we are looking forward to continuing these activities again this year. Students in kindergarten through 8th grade will have the opportunity to explore new areas and learn about different topics and hobbies. These will be areas that are not typically covered in the traditional SSJ curriculum. Our students will be given the chance to explore their individual areas of interest, and share that interest and talent with other students. Our hope is that the “clubs” will provide a natural setting to help our students practice and form new social skills, which will assist in building community at SSJ.
With the exception of the dance, yoga and chess classes (which will be taught by certified instructors) the majority of the clubs offered by faculty will be FREE! Depending on the activities, a nominal fee may be necessary to purchase any needed materials.
One of the first extracurricular activities that Sts. Simon & Jude School will be offering is five weeks of yoga. This class is open to students from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Anyone can do yoga with the right attitude and the right teacher. Students should bring a bottle of water, a towel and a mat if they have one. Students are also encouraged to wear their PE clothes. Information flyers will be going home this week with every student. There is a $50 fee for all five weeks of class. If this is something your child might be interested in, please complete and return the form and fee. Please note that the class size will be limited to 20 students, so it’s first-come, first-served!
Also being offered is the “World of Paint” club! Students in grades 2 through 5 will be able to explore all that Microsoft paint has to offer. Mrs. Velastegui and Mrs. Wicke will help the students explore their creativity, share their talents and create holiday projects. This class is FREE and limited to 20 students. Information flyers will also be sent home this week with the students.
We will keep you updated regarding other fun clubs that will be happening soon…keep reading the eNewsletter for all club updates.
