Our Library

Saints Simon and Jude School Library maintains an inventory of approximately 12,000 books, including numerous reference books, encyclopedias, magazines, biographies, fiction and non-fiction books and audio and videotapes. The library catalog and circulation of materials is computerized and computers are available for research. We have access to the Internet on all computers.

Students are invited to use the library during recess and lunch periods, as well as their scheduled class time.

Books are available for student check out, most on a two-week basis. Reference books may be checked out overnight. Every student is assigned a library account number and his or her card is kept on file in the library. There is a coin operated copy machine in the library for student use (cost 10 cents per copy).

In general, number of books students may have out at one time is:

Kindergarten one book
Grade One two books
Grade Two two books
Grade Three three books
Grade four - eight four books

Parents are invited to bring their child into the library and check out additional books with them at any time. There is also a small Parent Library with books available for checkout. There is a book return box in the school hallway outside the library and another one in the Junior High wing. Notices are sent to the student on Tuesday regarding overdue books. Students are expected to return books on time or renew them as needed.

STAR Reading (Accelerated Reader) Program: Kids who read succeed! Students in grades 2-8 are required to participate in our STAR program. Students agree to read selected library books during each quarter, and then take a computerized comprehension test on each book. Points for passed STAR tests are accumulated for each student. The bulletin board in the main hall (near the statue of Mary) acknowledges student efforts as STAR readers. There is also a reading awards assembly at the end of the school year.

Thanks to the support of the Huntington Beach Friends of the Library group, we have Author's Day each year where an author comes to visit the classroom and talk with the children about their books and the writing process. This is usually the end of January. Check our library page for details.

The library sponsors two Book Fairs each year: the full week before Thanksgiving and the last week of school in June. Proceeds benefit our library programs.
