One of the highlights of our school’s “Catch ‘Em Being Good” program is the special drawings that are held at the end of each month. The students look forward to this event with a lot of anticipation, and the lucky winner always responds with lots of enthusiasm and the solemn promise to take the prize and use at least 50% of the winnings to “pay it forward.” When Tyler Bird won the drawing on March 14, he exemplified both the enthusiasm and the promise to continue doing nice things for others. The following is Tyler’s story.
When I won the special drawing it wasn’t very hard to decide what to do with it, but I couldn’t decide how much I should give. I decided to donate 50% of the prize to the American Cancer Association. I decided to give it to them because my grandma has lung cancer. Then I decided to give the other half of the prize to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital where they work so hard to research and cure childhood cancer. I made that decision because I know those kids need the donation more than I need a new toy or video game. I would like to thank SSJ for giving me the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to two great organizations.
The photo we received from Tyler’s mom is a beautiful picture of Tyler with his grandmother. I am sure she is very proud of the mature generosity of her grandson! At SSJ, we certainly are!
