There is an old familiar adage at SSJ called “turning the corner” which aptly portrays the intermediate grades, beginning with grade 4. The physical contour of our building at SSJ is an “L” shape, with the pivotal point occurring between grades 4 and grade 5. This symbolic “turning the corner” begins with students having their first experience of “switching teachers” for various subjects, grappling with more abstract concepts and participating in a plethora of academic projects.
Through the years, SSJ has developed some traditions unique to the intermediate grades. The following is a small sampling of some of these events: Fourth grade students present a science fair at our Open House; Fifth grade students celebrate American history during their Parade of States exhibit; and Sixth grade students recognize the formation of societies during the Ancient Civilizations Festival.
