Welcome:
Baptism of children from the ages of 3 – 6 years is a sacrament of initiation into our faith community. Baptism is about belonging to the family of Jesus Christ. We ask you to prayerfully consider your decision and to find out as much as you can about this awesome responsibility you are considering.
Baptism of children at this age takes place each quarter of the year.
You may visit the parish office to begin the process. By completing the paperwork, you have made the first step in the formal faith journey with your child. We know that for some of you this is a decision that you make as active members of our faith community. Others may be returning to their faith community after being away and still others have not made a decision to return, but are seeking answers to questions about the sacrament of baptism for their child.
The good news is that you are not doing this alone. As members of this faith community, we also share in the responsibility. We are here to help you and will answer any questions that my come up. We are here for each other. We will learn from each other.
A life in Christ, being a Christian, is a life-long journey and we are honored to walk with you.
Preparation:
The responsibility you take is a shared one. After completion of the necessary paperwork, a member of the baptism team will contact you to let you know about the necessary steps of preparation. Preparation will consist of the following:
- An introductory meeting with the Baptism Team and a member of the Pastoral Staff. The dates for 2006 are January 22nd and April 23rd.
- Parents, children and godparents are required to attend a prayer service at 1:30 p.m. in the Church at which time the child will be anointed with the oil of the catechumens. This will usually be scheduled two weeks after the welcome meeting.
- Your child will be baptized during a Sunday liturgy or on a given Sunday afternoon. Parents, child and godparents are required to attend.
Godparents:
When choosing godparents for your child, we trust the following will assist in your selection:
- Christian relatives or friends who serve as a Christian role model for your child.
- Someone who gives witness to God in their everyday lives.
- Someone who is willing to maintain a long-term relationship with your child.
- Someone you would trust with the raising of your child in faith.
- Requirements of Catholic Canon Law
- A godparent of each gender
- One godparent must be a practicing Catholic who has received the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation and is at least 16 years of age.
- If there are cultural adaptations that require additional godparents, you can name additional Christian witnesses as sponsors, but only two godparents are included on the Baptismal Certificate.
